Daron Hall is the antithesis of the stereotypical Southern sheriff: he doesn’t like guns and it’s nearly impossible to find a photograph of him in uniform. Back when his reëlection was not guaranteed, he campaigned on the slogan “It’s what I do.” Like Friedmann, Hall can be self-important: the website of the sheriff’s office lists every predecessor of his since 1783. The vanity is tempered by compassion. Even Nashville conservatives don’t mind that Hall is a reform-minded Democrat who opposes the death penalty. (“I don’t think it’s the right thing until they execute rich people,” he told me.)
